THERE IS STILL MUCH TO BE DONE BEFORE THE CLASS OF 2014 GRADUATES IN MAY!In January, 8th grade will be reading "The House on Mango Street". The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age novel by Mexican-American writer Sandra Cisneros, published in 1984. It deals with a young Latina girl, Esperanza Cordero, growing up in Chicago with Chicanos and Puerto Ricans. Esperanza is determined to "say goodbye" to her impoverished Latino neighborhood. Major themes include her quest for a better life and the importance of her promise to come back for "the ones I left behind." Students will be getting instructions for the Multi-Genre Research Project during the first week back to class and due dates. Some time will be given during class, but the students will be working independantly with time sensitive due dates. Directions an some links are here. /uploads/2/4/4/7/24475462/8th_grade_multigenre_project.docx /uploads/2/4/4/7/24475462/blank_facebook_template.pptx During the month of December we will search for the "meaning of Christmas" by analyzing various pieces of literature including: O'Henry, Mark Twain and others. Students will be asked to prepare an essay on one of the themes that emerge from the readings. Our next novel study will be The House on Mango Street. We will likely begin after Christmas. In FEBRUARY students will read and report independently on an assigned text. 8th grade will be reading Part 2 of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee through the end of the first marking period. Students will be required to read a minimum of 2 chapters per day, in order to finish on time. Students have an active literature package that will be done in part in class and in part on their own. Students should be close reading with a purpose. Students will Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text Students will conclude the novel by completing an - in class - arts integration project and taking a test. |
